INTO THE 90's

In the early 80’s my journey began. I was photographing the street scene of Harlem when a childhood associate Russell Simmons came to me and asked if I would be interested in getting involves with this new music genre called Hip Hop, At that time Kurtis Blow was the only artist that Russell represented.

We began our marketing campaign with laugher and fun as Russell and I started giving out party fliers. We were doing hand to hand combat in three of the five boroughs Harlem, Queens, Bronx. We were  in search of clientele to attend our hip hop shows. We also plastered the subway system with illegally promotional stickers everywhere throughout

New York City.

There were very few clubs that would cater to the hip-hop promoters involved with this style of music. But the few that did understood what side of history they wanted to stand on. Smalls Paradise in Harlem and Hotel Diploma in Midtown, welcomes Hip Hop from day one.

As I gave thought to this opportunity with Russell, although i didn't really fully comprehend and wasn't not really feeling all that was going on with this new music scene at this time. The whole idea of documenting black people and their creations was a amazing chance to fulfill my goal of being apart of the historicizing of this new art form in American music.

In 1982 Russell Simmons gave me business cards that read Rush Production Unofficial Photographer I was mortified and surprise because I already began to documents his early roster of artist for promotional images and live performance. By 1983 there are four new clubs I’m being introduced to that would allow me to cast my lens on Hip Hop acts. The Funhouse, The Roxy, Dancetreia and Disco Fever.

For very little compensation or nothing at all, that when I began to understand that my reward was the documentation of this new history, but I also got introduced to my addictive personality.
